Official Statement on the Lebanese Esports and Robotics Federation’s Withdrawal from WEC24

Last week, the International Esports Federation (IESF) was informed by the Lebanese Esports and Robotics Federation of their withdrawal from this year’s World Esports Championship, mainly due to ongoing safety concerns in Lebanon.

The federation informed IESF that there was a discussion with the athletes and that they came to the conclusion that participating under these circumstances would not be possible. Although a few athletes were eager to attend, the federation’s decision to withdraw was made with their safety in mind and that it’s simply not reasonable to expect anyone to travel under such risks.

Following the statutes and the regulations for participation, IESF fully respects the Lebanese Esports and Robotics Federation’s decision. While we understand the athletes’ disappointment, our top priority is and always will be their safety and well-being. No competition can outweigh the importance of their security.

Our regulations for force majeure circumstances are clear, and we accept this decision with full understanding and empathy, confirming that no penalties will be imposed for their withdrawal.

The IESF Athletes Committee understands that the short timeframe limits the options for finding a resolution, as well as the challenging situation in the region. The AC assures the athletes that it will utilize all available resources to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.

IESF remains committed to promoting peace and unity in Esports. We stand in solidarity with the Lebanese Esports and Robotics Federation and hope for a fast resolution to the challenges they’re facing. We look forward to welcoming them back at next year’s World Esports Championship.
