Everything You need to Know About Esports Coaches

It’s true when they say “the players make the team,” but what’s important to understand here is that the coaches make the players!

Behind every strong esports team there has to be a coach to guide, prepare, and unite the players. This role may seem simple, but it is one of the most critical positions in esports. Besides having supreme game knowledge and experience, coaches usually have a “spidey sense” to make the right calls on the spot. That would mean adjusting the playstyle of the squad and analyzing the opponent’s strategy while the game is going on to make the necessary changes.

Another crucial aspect of coaching is understanding your players’ strengths and weaknesses. Let’s take NAVI’s CS:GO Team as an example. When it comes to playing specific maps, their coach would substitute one or two of the players and bring on the “map specialists,” while the remainder of the squad stays the same. This tactical substitute is a strong strategy that allows a fresh and rested player to dominate on their favorite map while the other team member recharges for the next match.

Understanding the strengths and weaknesses is one thing. Being able to guide and teach your players is another! Coaches need to be patient and committed while polishing the playstyle of their players. This could sometimes be a grueling process, but if the coaches and players are on the same page, their potential is limitless.

Lastly, and most importantly, the team needs to work together! Even though players are part of the same team, they need to function as one unit, like a family. The players need to trust their coaches’ guidance and tactics, and  the coaches need to trust their players.

It may sound simple, but it can be  one of the most challenging  aspects of creating a solid esports roster. Compatibility, willingness to sacrifice, and trust are the pillars of a solid esports team.
