Tekken 7 has taken the eSports community by storm and is set to hit Namibia this September. The competition will be a battle of the country’s top eSport players in the Tekken category. eSports are a form of competition that is facilitated by electronic systems, particularly video games. The market globally has a revenue of U$493M and viewership of 71.5M through streaming and other digital services.
NESA spokesperson, Timo Lippert explained that the competition will be held under strict International Electronic Sports Federation rules and regulations. On September 2, preliminary rounds for the competition will start in Swakopmund as well as in Windhoek, with the finals taking place on September 9. The finals will offer top honours, with the Namibian National Colours that will be awarded to 2 players. The competition will be held in unison between Windhoek and Swakopmund.
Competitors for the preliminary rounds in Swakopmund are expected to be at the Swakop Truckport Engen at 10:00 with the competition kicking off at 11:00. In Windhoek, the games will take place at DTS Sportsgrounds and competitors are also expected to register by 10:00 with the games starting at 11:00. Entry fees are N$300 which includes the yearly N$250 NESA membership fee. The competition only offers 32 player spots per qualifier where 16 from each qualifier will go through to the finals. Winners will receive Namibian National Colours and compete against countries like South Africa. The competition will accord national eSports players a possible chance to compete on an International level under the Namibian flag at the IeSF 2017 World Championship.
The Tekken event is open to Namibian nationals only. “The aim of NESA is to professionalise and globalise competitive electronic sports in Namibia and to enhance our competitive reach. The Tekken nationals are being held to find Namibia’s top Tekken players and award them Namibian National Colours which will then allow them to compete on a scale never before seen in Namibia under the national banner”, Lippert explained.
