Recognition For South African eSports

Protea Colours are the highest accolade that is awarded to South African sporting teams. Only the Protea Colours Board can award Protea Colours. The members of such board consist of people representing both the South African Department of Sport and Recreation (SRSA), and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

Thus all South African teams that are fully accredited wear the much coveted Protea badge on their ‘battle kit’. No doubt readers who were watching the 2010 FIFA World Cup would have noticed that the South African squad “Bafana Bafana” wore the Protea emblem on the leir shirts. Likewise the South African rugby squad, swimmers, athletes, etcetera, all wear the Protea emblem when the team meets the criteria of the Protea Colours Board and represents South Africa officially in international competition. With Mind Sports South Africa (MSSA) having designed its qualifying rounds to meet the Protea Colours Board’s requirements, the MSSA is well on track to have the team that will attend the 2010 IeSF Grand Final approved by the Protea Colours Board for the award for Protea Colours.

This will be the first time that gamers will be awarded such colours for FIFA Online and WarCraft III. The award of such colours not only indicates the level of accreditation that eSports has managed to achieve in South Africa, but also assists the gamers in obtaining sports bursaries at Universities. There is no doubt, that eSports with the award of Protea Colours, will, in South Africa, continue to grow and flourish.
